I am an idealist who still is trying to change the world one day at a time.Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.comBlogger302125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-45210023141097330112017-01-19T15:56:00.001-07:002017-01-19T15:56:49.814-07:00How did that happen?I couldn't believe when I clicked on the blog site that it had been August since I posted. I could blame it on being busy, but that's not the truth. It seems like I lost the fall with a bad case of shingles and just really got back into the swing of life right before Christmas. Nothing much new happening here. Guitar Guy is hanging in with his treatment and I'm still knitting for the grandchildren. Socks on the needles for the little boys right now.

Hope 2017 brings you much happiness!Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-55793196317446680062016-08-30T10:02:00.000-07:002016-08-30T10:02:00.073-07:00Lazy SummerI admit I have been a total sloth this summer. I've continued to work part time but otherwise haven't done much of anything. It is glorious! I know sitting and binge watching Netflix while knitting isn't good for my health but I sure do love it. I've also been listening to Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows while doing a counted cross stitch Christmas stocking for my grandson.

Now the summer is almost over and my fingers are crossed for a job with health insurance starting in the fall. I've had a second interview for a position, so keep a good thought for me. Guitar Guy is hanging in there and is still so happy to be home.

And now for some serious cuteness from Baby Liara who has finally almost reached 7 lbs so she can fit in newborn clothes. We get to go see her in early October and can't wait!

I've been reading Marie Kondo's book on tidying and am debating whether I really have the umph to pull out every piece of clothing I own and go through it. The image of a tidy house isn't quite enough incentive for the work it would take. I'll keep reading.

Now back to reading another fluff book before summer is truly over.

Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-32343005186731665462016-05-13T08:53:00.000-07:002016-05-13T08:53:00.894-07:00A graduate at lastTomorrow is my graduation with a Masters in Social Work after 2 years of hard work. Sadly, I won't be in North Dakota to walk with my class but I will watch online. I have a tremendous feeling of accomplishment though now I have to start looking for a job!

Last weekend Guitar Guy and I flew to Iowa to attend our grandson's 7th birthday party. It was a short visit but there were plenty of hugs to go around. We are hoping to make it back sometime this summer for a longer visit. We also are waiting for our first granddaughter to make her appearance sometime in the next month. That will send us off to Florida for some cuddle time with the wee one. Of course, knitting is in progress. I haven't blocked anything yet but will post pictures eventually.

Guitar Guy is off to the Social Security office today to see about applying for Social Security disability and/or retirement. He's doing pretty well since arriving back home and has been enjoying time with friends and riding his motorcycle.

That's the news from our house. What's going on with you?Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-25491372177483576722016-03-05T08:38:00.003-07:002016-03-25T08:04:16.607-07:00Guitar Guy coming home soonThe good news for this post is that Guitar Guy is coming home in a few weeks. He will be continuing treatment at home and can't wait. School, work, and internship continue for me and I just keep plodding along. I am liking the earlier sunrise and later sunset. For the first time in months, I'm not driving to internship in the dark!

Knitting time has been at a minimum but I am working on a baby blanket. It's a lace pattern that is giving me fits. No matter how I count, I think I've missed a few yarn overs and had to catch up.

Now off to work on my paper.Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-17643103128281723672016-01-06T08:57:00.001-07:002016-01-06T08:57:34.110-07:00And the race to the finish beginsWe got through the holidays and mostly had a a nice time. Guitar Guy spent the holidays with his siblings and I spent Christmas with our son and family. New Year's weekend, the cats and I vegged, watched TV, knitted, and caught up on sleep. It was really nice to have 3 days to just let down and putter.

Now I'm back in the groove and plugging along on my independent study project. 324 out of 500 required hours of internship completed so I'm over the hump! That doesn't mean that I get to quit when I hit 500 (which will probably be around the end of March). I have to complete the semester, which means I'll be there until the first week of May. I just know I'll feel better when I hit that magic number and know that the minimum requirement is met!

One more cup of coffee, then off to work. Hope you have a great day and week!Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-67440597748244503772015-11-06T07:07:00.000-07:002015-11-06T07:07:14.821-07:00Plugging along

The best part of the last month was a visit from our son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandsons, while Guitar Guy was home for 2 weeks. Now he's back in Florida doing chemo and I'm plugging away on internship and work. It's no fun, but it is what we both need to be doing right now.

I am knitting socks for the grandsons but it's slow going. Just not very inspired this year.

Off to a full day of in-home visits with my clients. Have a great weekend!
My social work internship has started and the extra time is crunching my schedule. I knew it was going to be busy between August and May but had not counted on Guitar Guy being diagnosed with colon cancer. We were totally taken by surprise and life changed in an instant. He's currently in Florida with our daughter so that he can have access to Moffitt Cancer Center. Surgery is done and now we wait for the recommendations on chemo over the next several months. Keep a good thought for us and give your loved ones a hug.

I had a wonderful week in Iowa with my son and his family even though Guitar Guy didn't get to go. It was hot and sticky so we did mostly inside activities. These photos were from the Children's Museum, where we spent part of an afternoon. They have a whole restaurant set up for making play pizza complete with menus, a drink station and check out. Although the boys liked the "blue room" with all of its building components, the airplane room is their favorite. Many activities and play planes to pretend to fly.

The summer semester is winding down. Only one more week of classes and a few projects to finish this weekend. We will have to write a major paper on the social work standards before the 16th and my internship starts the 25th of August. Not looking forward to the commute back and forth to Bullhead City for 8 months but I'll survive.

Hoping you are having some down time this summer to enjoy family and fun!
This is my 5th Father's Day without my dad and by now I thought it would be easier. Then I remember that I still can't walk through a Mother's Day card aisle without tearing up and my mom has been gone for 27 years.

This isn't the deep overwhelming grief I used to feel, but instead a bittersweet ache for the time we had and a wish for just one more hug. (My dad was a great hugger in his older years!)

Although he could be critical and cranky, today I will remember the love and laughter he brought to my life. For that I am truly grateful.

I haven't been around the blog much in a couple of months. Life has been stressful and I've gotten little more done than what I absolutely have to for work and school. The heat is reminding me how much I have grown to dislike Arizona summers. I have no motivation to knit and still need to start cross stitching my grandson's Christmas stocking. The good news is that I'm almost half way through summer semester and have a short vacation with family planned in July.

Now I have a paper to write and maybe a trip to the grocery store. Do I know how to live it up?

I was so excited for the week off until I realized that A) I still had to work and B) I had tons of school projects to get caught up on.

I did one fun thing this week at least. Monday night one of our local theaters screened a touring version of "The Last Unicorn". I've been watching this movie almost since it was released. My kids loved it and now my grandchildren are watching it. The author of the book and screenplay, Peter Beagle, is part of a screening tour across the US which includes a Q & A with him and book signings if one is so inclined.

Guitar Guy faded out at the last minute so I went by myself. It was a smallish crowd of about 50 people, some who had driven up to 150 miles. The teenagers cleaning the theater had no idea what the movie was about and asked me if it is a "thing". Actually it is! People sometimes come in costume and know every song and bit of dialogue by heart. The remastered version for the big screen was vivid and beautiful and I had a great time. Big nerd here and proud of it!

Last weekend we had a glorious time in Phoenix with our daughter. We went to Arizona Broadway Theater's performance of Les Mis, which was excellent, as was the food and company. Nicole and I love musical theater. Guitar Guy not so much, but he tolerates it for our sake. Did I mention that ABT has amazing frozen fuzzy navels?

Sunday morning I drove to downtown Phoenix to meet up Facebook Fairyland friend Lorri and her furry boy Dodger. We've discovered we both have Ragdolls and decided to meet while they were visiting for spring training. Dodger is loving the spring and was sitting patiently by the door waiting for me (or watching the birds). I gifted him with a lovely catnip toy (one of Pippin's favorites), which was a major hit. We talked, drank coffee and petted a purring kitty. The perfect way to start the day!

As soon as I got back to the apartment, the family headed out to The Great Wall for dim sum. Unfortunately, because we went late, they were low on baked pork buns, which are my personal favorite. No one left hungry though. We made a Trader Joe's run so I could stock up on my favorite products. Those of us who live in the boonies don't have such options.

This weekend won't be nearly as fun as I'm working on school stuff, which will be my life until the end of the semester. Next week is my internship interview, so please keep your fingers crossed that I can convince them to take me. It will mean a lengthy drive twice a week for 8 months but I will persevere!
Happy Monday!Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-74699832194372289332015-01-26T09:05:00.003-07:002015-01-26T09:05:45.477-07:00January blahsIt's almost the end of January and I'm still not back in the swing of things. School has started again and life is full of work and volunteering but my beginning of the year energy just isn't there yet.

I've been trying to do 365 days of decluttering and have kept up fairly well so far. My kitchen cupboards are a lot more organized and by the end of this week, my refrigerator should be cleaned out. As much as I dislike cleaning, 15 minutes a day is manageable on most days.

Now I'm off to do 200 pages of reading on panic disorder and social phobias. Aren't you jealous :-)
The weather was cool and misty. With no snow on the ground this year we were able to go out and do a few things like a trip to the Amana Colonies and another to Prairie Light bookstore in downtown Iowa City. The big people even got out for a special dinner together.

Two of the hits of Christmas morning were the rocking horse for Ash and the lighted mini ray guns the boys found in their stockings. Rowan and Ash had a great time and didn't get bored until the next day LOL

Aunt Nicole was able to come for a couple of days before Christmas and we had a great time together as a family. We were happy our daughter, Nicole, was there to be part of the fun, and our son, Dominic, and daughter-in-law, Alex, were both off for the week. That rarely happens that everyone is off together!

It's always hard to leave, especially when the boys are telling us not to go, but the realities of life called us back to Arizona. The cats still have barely left my side.

Soon school will start again and I'll be back in another round of reading and papers. I'm closing my nonprofit consulting business, to focus on geriatric care and my volunteer work with Creating the Future. Guitar Guy is moving to a different law firm starting January 2, so the new year will bring changes for both of us.

Hoping you and yours had a wonderful Christmas and have a healthy, happy 2015!Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-73868585572780640362014-12-14T09:23:00.004-07:002014-12-14T09:23:50.798-07:00First Christmas Our first Christmas celebration this year was with our daughter Nicole and her boyfriend, Scott. We baked cookies, made eggrolls and watched Christmas movies. She was very excited about her new Christmas dragon and the blue Kitchenaid mixer she really wanted.

Today we'll start the morning with pumpkin pancakes and apple cider syrup followed by more cookie baking. Guitar Guy is off to play a gig with his band, while we continue the movie marathon.
Back home from North Dakota and already missing the beautiful fall weather. It was a wonderful week and I learned a ton but took very few pictures to share with you. My first day I went to Red Pepper Tacos, which is a Grand Forks tradition. Friends who grew up there told me to have a grinder with ham, taco meat and hot sauce, so that's what I did. They also shared fond memories of stopping there after school or during college.

While online school is convenient, there really is nothing like being on campus in a live classroom, or going out with friends after class is done. It has been a good many years since I attended my undergraduate program and I'd forgotten how fun it is to be surrounded by a group of people who are as passionate as I am about social work.

Most of my classmates were kind about including this grandma in their activities even though many are young enough to be my kids! I did learn from the 20 and 30 somethings that Dr. Who is either for teens or old people. Does that mean I'm a teenager?
This week is back to the routine of work and homework with a long string of papers due between now and Christmas break. What about you? How is your week going?Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-74152203447453968252014-10-10T08:39:00.002-07:002014-10-10T08:39:51.146-07:00Live from Grand Forks, NDIt's hard to believe that I'm sitting here in Grand Forks, preparing for my on campus week at UND. I've known I would be here for a long time, but it's a strange feeling being alone in a city I know little about and not knowing a soul here. That will all change tonight when the rest of my 50 or so MSW classmates show up for the meet and greet.

I'm excited and anxious at the same time about a full week of immersion in group therapy practice but am looking forward to meeting my classmates in person, after months of online interactions. Even with live feeds, it is hard to get to know much about each other beyond the superficial.

Today more people start arriving and I'm off to meet a couple of them for lunch. Off to shower and bundle up for the cold weather. Thanks goodness for wool socks!Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-34728308326300460522014-09-18T07:58:00.000-07:002014-09-18T07:58:21.981-07:00Fall isn't in the airEven after so many years in the desert, September always seems like it should be the beginning of fall. In reality, we still have 100+ degree days and warm nights, and summer clothes will needed for another 2 months. This year we've been hit with rain from tropical storms, making the air sticky and our streets flooded. That must mean it is time to get out my fall tablecloth and decorations in a vain attempt to "feel" a change of seasons that doesn't exist here. Some years that works better than others.

School and work are chugging along and school board has become busy again. Knitting still is at a minimum, as my evening classes cut in to prime knitting/tv time. In less than a month I'll be headed out to North Dakota to spend a week immersed on social work with the rest of my class. I expect that will be both invigorating and exhausting. I feel for the couple of moms coming with brand new babies in arms and will be grateful for my quiet room in the evenings.

Life continues to evolve as changes are happening with Guitar Guy's business. More to come on that. This week I was reading about the family life cycle for a class and how important transitions affect family dynamics. It was another reminder that we all continue to evolve and change from the day we are born until the day we die. For today, I choose to think that is mostly a good thing :-)
I finished my first semester of school and have a couple of weeks off with no reading or papers. I learned a lot but was pretty well exhausted by the time I turned in that last assignment.

Work has been picking up, with more clients than I really wanted, given my school schedule. Our budget is in need of the income, especially if we want a little extra to visit the grandkids. I've been experimenting with doing some visits in Kingman, an hour north of us, so have added a good bit of driving to my routine. The good news is that I am re-listening to all of the Jim Butcher books on my Ipod as I travel.

We just got home from a visit to Iowa and had our whole family together for a couple of days. That's a rare occurrence these days with everyone's busy schedules. Every time we go it gets harder to leave. We are at that weird stage in life where we see retirement coming in the next 5-7 years, but it is still too far away to be excited. I keep talking to Guitar Guy about moving closer to the kids eventually, but at this point we don't know where they will end up.

Since I have to see my clients every week, I had a full day of visits yesterday and another one today to make up for vacation. As I hit the road for Kingman, I leave you with this cute face, still so clear in my mind
You can't see my house because I seem to have forgotten what cleaning is (and I never was strong on that to begin with). What I am doing is working a lot and studying a lot!

I'm suddenly wondering what I was doing with all that free time before I started school. More knitting and binge tv probably. I'm surviving school and some days, actually thriving on it. A few times I've been caught off guard by new theories created in the 30+ years since I finished my BSW. Mostly I find my fellow students are struggling with the same things I am, no matter what their age.

I'm counting down the 3 weeks until the semester ends, and trying not to think too much about the papers yet to be written. At the end awaits a glorious week with my grandsons in Iowa and all the sweet corn I can eat. I can't wait!Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-3262181849119928662014-05-31T09:26:00.001-07:002014-05-31T09:26:32.875-07:00Reading, reading, reading TEXTBOOKS!Just a quick note since I've been so bad at keeping this blog up to date:
*Still haven't finished cleaning the office
*Working more
*Started graduate school 2 weeks ago and still trying to adjust to the workload
*Got to spend my grandson's 5th birthday with him
*The heat has hit Arizona and I feel limp
*Spending tomorrow with my daughter and going to a play
*Being lazy and avoiding the schoolwork I know I have to do today

That's all for now!Galadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09246042661575565455noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2585739827049021767.post-92150164188126651062014-04-05T10:07:00.000-07:002014-04-05T10:07:13.274-07:00Tackling the office

The goal for this weekend is to clean the office and set up the new desktop computer sitting in that big box on the floor! I also have to figure out where to put the yarn overflow LOL
Everyone is sneezing, coughing and trying to track down allergy medication (which is fast disappearing from store shelves). It seems a shame to close up the house and term on the air conditioning so soon, but that is the only real alternative to a drippy nose and streaming eyes.

Our temps have already been in the high 80's and 90's, which doesn't bode well for the summer. If you've been suffering through feet of snow, I may appear to be a whiner. To truly appreciate the "joys" of an AZ summer, please come visit at the end of June or early July :-)

The good news is that I'm staying steadily busy in my business, have extra projects to keep me stimulated and intrigued, am getting everything lined up for school and am getting some knitting done. I'm trying to start the Water and Stone sweater for my daughter, but it begins with a cable, which is not something I've done before. I'm also concerned about the yarn I chose and how to size the sweater. Thankfully she's close enough that I can find an opportunity to try it on her. I'm aiming to be finished for the fall, so have time.

I finally made a pair of Skyp socks for me from Sanguine Gryphon (now Verdant Gryphon) Bugga. Love the feel and the pattern. Will definitely do these again.
The Mukluks are for my beautiful daughter, once I sew the suede on the
bottom. I made a pair from my grandson and she requested an adult size.
Thankfully there is an adult pattern so I didn't have to resize. The yarn is a cheap acrylic but very soft. A quick fun knit.

Right now I'm working on these Hermione socks in Opal Tonks. I don't usually like pink, but this yarn just kept calling to me. It's good to expand one's color palette :-)
For her background she used a little piece of lacy knitting I did for her. I loved the juxtaposition of the snowflake on the "forest" of fiber so thought I'd share.
